It becomes clear that the nineties are back in vogue when we take a look at the new releases in Tunify! Somehow, the year 1999 is the common thread in this week’s music news...

Roméo Elvis and his equally famous sister Angèle were both born in the nineties. This year they scored an enormous hit with “Tout Oubliér”. In Flanders, it went top 10, but in the Walloon and French charts, it hit Number One big time. The video won at Les Victoires De La Musique, the French equivalent of the Grammy Awards. After some EP’s and successful fraternization with producer Le Motel, Roméo releases a brand new album. You might already know the singles “Malade” and “Normal”, in which he deals with his past as a, well, dealer. This weekend you can enjoy collaborations with the eccentric French artist M, Tanguy Haesevoets a.k.a. Témé Tan and Damon Albarn, lead singer of Blur.

Tim Akkerman is what they call a nineties kid. At only nineteen, he became the lead singer and guitarist of Dutch band Di-rect, back in 1999. Ten years later he quit the band to go solo. He retreated to his parent’s country house in Zoutelande to write. Three albums later, he gets help from the brilliant musicians of The Ivy League, the band who toured with Tim on “Tim Akkerman sings The Boss!”, his homage to the songs of Bruce Springsteen. With a little imagination, you can call The Ivy League his E-Street Band. Tim’s collection of new songs may remind you of those classics from Bruce The Boss.

I say ‘the nineties’, you yell ‘The Spice Girls’. Baby Spice released her first solo singles 20 years ago. Today, Emma Bunton drops a soul orientated album in your Tunify player with eight cover songs and two original tracks. The producer responsible for these tracks is called Metrophonic. This guy won a Grammy for Cher’s “Believe” back in –yes, you guessed it – 1999! This millennium, Emma showed up for some movies, television and reality shows, like Zoolander, Absolutely Fabulous and RuPaul’s Drag Race, but to paraphrase her last hit from 2001: “What Took You So Long”?

Conquerors of the dancefloor, The Chemical Brothers, scored their biggest hit with “Hey Boy Hey Girl” in the last year of the nineties. Today they hope to match that overwhelming success with a brand new album.

Chemicals and dance music always went hand in hand, even way before the nineties. The supergroup LSD is not named after their drug of choice. Just take the first letter from the famous group members’ name, British musician Labrinth, Australian singer-songwriter Sia and American producer Diplo and you’ll get the less imaginative picture.

One year after the passing of the divine DJ Avicii a new single has been released. Luckily for music lovers all over the world, his family decided not to keep his almost finished work locked away for eternity. “S.O.S.” is once again a collaboration with Aloe Blacc, after the widely successful “Wake Me Up”.
