‘Tunify does exactly what we need’

Hotel Voncken in Valkenburg is soon to celebrate its 130th birthday. For more than a century, this family company made their way without Tunify. But fifth-generation proprietor Tom Pijls has brought Tunify Orange on board. He tells us about the uplifting role of the music player in the hotel.

Hotel Voncken is one of the oldest hotels in Valkenburg. It is well known by guests from the higher market segment. The business has witnessed the rise of tourism in Valkenburg and steadily invested to maintain the quality of the hotel. The rooms and the bar have undergone full renovations in recent years.

The hotel is an excellent location for all sorts of events, including dinners, celebrations and conferences. The hotel receives groups of up to 100 people in the restaurant, regularly hosts corporate and wedding receptions, and welcomes you to hold your meetings or multi-day conferences there.

Music tailored to each area

Tom chose a double subscription to provide music in two areas of the hotel: one for the restaurant and one for the bar: ‘In the restaurant, the music mostly plays in the background. At the moment, the Jazz & Piano Bar music agenda from Tunify Green is playing. In the bar, the music is used more to set the atmosphere and lure guests in. You often hear the Tunify Blue mood channels Grand Café and Barista Bar.’

‘In Tunify Orange, we have also made a general playlist that fits in nicely with most situations,’ continues Tom. ‘But actually, nothing is set in stone. We adjust the music to suit the seasons and the guests in the hotel. We even play song requests via Tunify Orange.’

Feedback is more positive

Hotel Voncken exchanged a different music system for the Tunify music player. Why? ‘Tunify is simpler to use and more attractively priced. The player does exactly what we need. And a handy extra is the ability to import Spotify playlists in Tunify. Finally, it was crucial for us to choose a service that covers the music rights and duties in a hospitality environment.’

Today, you only hear Tunify in Hotel Voncken. The radio used to be on during breakfast, but those days are in the past according to Tom: ‘In reviews, we occasionally read that guests preferred to hear music at breakfast instead of radio babble. Now the feedback is more positive. Guests often ask us what the lovely song is that’s playing. Or we hear them singing along.’

Music for the time of year

Very little time or effort is needed to keep Tunify music playing at Hotel Voncken. In the morning, the volume knob is turned and that’s usually all that’s needed. ‘Every now and again, we adjust the music to make sure it’s what we want for that time of year,’ explains Tom. ‘We like to play music with the appropriate theme, especially around Christmas and Carnival.’

This is also one of Tom’s tips for other Tunify users. ‘In the player, you’ll find music for all atmospheres, moods and occasions. Make good use of it. As well as this, you can ‘train’ the player by giving inappropriate songs the thumbs down. And in Tunify Blue, you see which atmosphere or mood the current track comes from. This teaches you which atmosphere is best suited to your business.’
